British National Curriculum
The British National Curriculum is a framework used by schools in England to ensure that teaching and learning are balanced and consistent. It sets out the subjects that children are expected to learn, the content they should cover, and the standards they should meet at different ages.
At Shepherds Junior School, we follow the Cambridge curriculum, which is designed to be student-centered, encouraging our learners to take an active role in their education. With a strong international focus, the curriculum prepares students with the skills and knowledge needed to succeed in our rapidly changing world.
Our aim is to provide an excellent and enjoyable learning experience for all students by offering a broad and balanced curriculum. This approach not only ensures a strong foundation across various subjects but also allows students to specialize in areas where they show strength or have particular interests.
At Shepherds Junior School, we believe in nurturing each child’s individual talents and fostering a deep love for learning that will guide them through their future academic journey and beyond. By providing a supportive and stimulating environment, we encourage our students to explore their interests, develop their strengths, and grow in confidence.
How It Works
The curriculum is divided into Key Stages, which are age-related phases:
- Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS): Ages 3-5 (nursery and reception).
- Key Stage 1 (KS1): Ages 5-7 (Years 1 and 2).
- Key Stage 2 (KS2): Ages 7-11 (Years 3 to 6).
- Key Stage 3 (KS3): Ages 11-14 (Years 7 to 9).
- Key Stage 4 (KS4): Ages 14-16 (Years 10 and 11) – students take GCSE (General Certificate of Secondary Education) exams at the end of this stage.
- Key Stage 5 (KS5): Ages 16-18 (Years 12 and 13) – students typically study A-Levels, vocational qualifications, or apprenticeships.
At Shepherds Junior School, we offer a broad range of subjects as part of the Cambridge curriculum, ensuring our students receive a well-rounded education. Core subjects like English, mathematics, and science provide a strong academic foundation, while subjects such as history, geography, and religious education help broaden students’ understanding of the world around them. We also emphasize the importance of creativity and self-expression through art, music, and drama, and promote physical well-being and teamwork through physical education. Additionally, students engage with information and communication technology (ICT) to develop essential digital literacy skills. This balanced approach ensures that each learner is exposed to a variety of disciplines, helping them discover their passions and build the skills needed for future success.
